Pre-release Rebel 12

Below you can download the pre-release of REBEL 12 running under the Lokasoft interface. The download is only meant for REBEL 10, REBEL 11 or REBEL CENTURY 4.0 customers and thus you will need one of those CD-ROM's at hand during installation.

REBEL 12 will run on your PC till September 30, 2003, there after the program will expire. The commercial version of REBEL 12 is expected somewhere this year when the remaining features are programmed.

Limitations

The engine comes as is in its current state of development. Regarding its strength it is estimated as somewhat stronger than the current REBEL 12 (DOS) beta-1 version. You can load all the known and/or self created personalities.

It's limitations are mainly the not yet fully tuned time-levels. It means that so now and then Rebel will lose some games on time.

Another limitation is the lack of learning, this also still need to be done. Keep both limitations in mind when pitting this pre-release against other chess programs.

Although the engine is programmed using the so called Winboard Protocol it does not function quite well under other chess interfaces. There are no plans to make REBEL 12 fully compatible with other chess interfaces.

Known problems

• Time levels may not work correctly.
• Analysis mode does not work.
• Mate in # and stalemate is not always correctly reported (which may cause autoplayed games to stop or no move is given).
• Node counters not always correct.
• Book moves not displayed.
• When starting the engine the windows swap file grows with 500-700 MB, this normally won't effect operation but it does mean you need at least 1 GB free disk space. Under XP the effect can be seen from the windows taskmanger.

Only download this program when you have one of the mentioned CD-ROMs available. It simply won't install without one of these CD-ROM's

Update July 29, 2003.

• Various issues are solved in this update, the most important ones: all time levels should function properly, the SWAP file problem is fixed, a stronger engine is included.
• Download the REBEL 12 pre-release update

• Installation: Unzip the executable (rebel12.exe) over the old one, unzip BETA9.ENG into the sub-folder PERSONAL, that's all.
• To use BETA9.ENG as your new chess partner go to the menu EXTRA -> Engine Properties -> Personality.

HINTS (for connoisseurs only)

• If you wish Rebel's book moves can be made visible, do as follows: open the file "rebel12.cpeini" with a text-program, change the line "Options=2;" to "Options=18;" and save the file.
• Unlike the DOS version while calculating there is no way to check which personality is running neither can you see the hash table size under Windows. While I consider that as a pain the Windows Rebel maintains a kind of debug file called PARAM.TXT. Open this file with a text-program while Rebel is calculating and you will know. It is very handy while running Rebel under other interfaces to check if everything is loaded correctly.
• With this update the DOS and Windows version are now in synch with each other regarding all the engine options as listed on this page.
